Current Projects

SATHI designs and implements programmes that protect, empower, and uphold the rights of children, with a special focus on those in vulnerable and difficult circumstances. Through outreach, rescue, rehabilitation, family restoration, and advocacy, we work to ensure that every child has the opportunity to live safely, learn, and thrive through projects.

Rescue and Rehabilitation of Runaway Children (New Delhi & Pune)

SATHI’s flagship intervention focuses on rescuing runaway, lost, and separated children found on railway platforms and restoring them safely to their families through a structured reintegration model.

The programme highlights:

  • Staff are deployed for regular outreach at railway stations to identify and rescue vulnerable children at the earliest, preventing trafficking, abuse, and exploitation while ensuring they receive immediate care, counselling, protection, rehabilitation, and support for safe family restoration or alternative care.
  • Running Open Shelter Home is essential to provide them with immediate safety, care, and protection, where they receive nutritious food, healthcare, counselling, psychosocial care, and family tracing services to enable rehabilitation and safe reintegration. In addition, The Shelter Home provides care and protection through counselling and non-formal education (NFE) classes.
  • Family reintegration and post-restoration support help children safely return to their families while providing continued counselling, education assistance, and follow-up care to prevent school dropout and ensure their long-term well-being and development.

Every child found alone on a railway platform has a story, a family, and the right to a safe and hopeful future. Keeping this in mind to address these unheard issues, SATHI envisions expanding its railway child protection programme to reach more transit points, strengthening early identification, immediate care, family tracing, and long-term reintegration so that every runaway, lost, or separated child can return to a life of safety, education, and belonging. In the years ahead, we will deepen partnerships with government agencies, railway authorities, child protection systems, and communities while investing in comprehensive rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and follow-up services along with existing Railway Childline that prevent children from returning to the streets. Our commitment is not only to rescue children in crisis but to restore childhood, rebuild families, and create sustainable futures where every child is protected, nurtured, and empowered to thrive.

This programme focuses on improving education, nutrition, and social protection for children of migrant worker families. SATHI works to ensure school enrolment, reduce dropouts, provide higher education support, and strengthen access to government welfare schemes.

The initiative includes:

  • Establishing Learning and Resource Centres for the youth to empower vulnerable communities by providing education, learning resources, psychosocial support, and life skills for a brighter future. In addition, this, the Learning & Resource Centre aims to facilitate the information sharing on social welfare schemes, career guidance including books for competitive examination, orientation to skill development and support the development process in the district.
  • Evening tuition support provides remedial education and homework assistance to help children succeed academically, especially Science, English and Mathematics to reduce the risk of school dropout.
  • Nutrition awareness programmes through kitchen garden to promote healthy dietary habits and improve knowledge of nutrition to support children's overall health and development.
  • Youth and children's groups provide a platform for children and adolescents to build leadership skills, strengthen peer support, and actively participate in decisions affecting their well-being.
  • Life skills to equip children and adolescents with the knowledge, confidence, and decision-making skills
  • Gender education to build healthy relationships, promote gender equality, prevent violence and discrimination, and make informed life choices.
  • Scholarship guidance enables children and adolescents to identify and apply for educational scholarships, making quality education more accessible and affordable. This helps to ensure social protection schemes for families.
  • Skill development initiatives for the youths that equip children and youth with vocational, technical, and life skills that improve employability, promote self-reliance, and enable them to secure sustainable livelihoods.

SATHI envisions a future where every child of a migrant worker has uninterrupted access to quality education, adequate nutrition, social protection, and opportunities to reach their full potential, regardless of their family’s circumstances. SATHI aims to expand our community-based learning and child development initiatives to more migrant settlements and underserved villages at source areas, while strengthening ecosystems of partnerships with schools, local communities, and government systems. By empowering children, adolescents, and young people with education, life skills, higher education support, and livelihood opportunities, we aspire to break the cycle of poverty and migration-related vulnerabilities, enabling them to build secure, dignified, and self-reliant futures. In addition, SATHI closely working with the Panchayat Raj Institutions to enhance the capacities of the Women and Child Welfare Committees to prevent and tracking system of the migrant communities.

This programme supports street-connected, dropout, addicted and vulnerable children in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area through protection services, education support, psychosocial care, de-addiction camp and family reintegration.

The programme operates:

  • Learning Centres provide a safe, supportive space where children from vulnerable communities receive academic support, life skills education, creative learning activities (art and craft), and opportunities for personal development.
  • Outreach in 32 urban communities identifies vulnerable children and families, connects them to essential services, and promotes education, health, nutrition, and child protection through community engagement.
  • Work with 30 government schools and 2 Learning Centres to strengthen academic achievement by providing remedial education, digital learning, library facilities, life skills education, career guidance, and a safe learning environment for children who need additional support beyond regular school hours.
  • Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) helps children and adolescents build emotional well-being, resilience, and coping skills to overcome stress, trauma, and everyday challenges.
  • De-addiction and educational orientation 30 days camps help children affected by substance use through counselling, awareness sessions, health support, and education guidance, enabling them to overcome addiction risks, rebuild confidence, and reconnect with learning and a positive future.
  • Community-based child protection systems engage families, community members, schools, and local stakeholders to identify and prevent risks such as abuse, trafficking, and school dropout, while creating a safe and supportive environment for children’s protection, development, and well-being.

SATHI envisions expanding this programme to reach many more street-connected and vulnerable children across urban communities, ensuring that no child is left to survive on the streets without care, protection, or hope. By strengthening community-based child protection systems, expanding mental health and psychosocial support, organizing de-addiction camps enhancing access to education and rehabilitation, and promoting sustainable family reintegration, SATHI aims to create lasting pathways from the streets to secure homes, classrooms, and dignified lives. Our vision is not only to rescue children from vulnerability but to walk alongside them until they become confident, resilient, and empowered individuals who can shape a better future for themselves and their communities.

Study: SATHI commissioned an independent study on the situation of street-connected children in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) areas to better understand their realities, vulnerabilities, and unmet needs. The study revealed that poverty, migration, family breakdown, neglect, and limited access to social protection are the primary factors pushing children onto the streets, leaving many excluded from education, healthcare, and other essential services. It also highlighted critical gaps in child protection, mental health support, rehabilitation, and family reintegration, reinforcing the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies, civil society, and communities. The findings continue to inform SATHI’s advocacy and programme design, strengthening efforts to ensure every street-connected child receives care, protection, education, and a pathway to a safe and dignified future.

Campaigns: At SATHI, campaigns are more than awareness events, they are movements that inspire communities to protect and promote the rights of children. Our campaigns are carefully planned around key child rights issues, including child protection, education, child labour, child marriage, nutrition, enrolment in the school, gender equality and access to government entitlements.

Development Dialogues:  SATHI believes that lasting change begins with meaningful dialogue. Children cannot realize their rights to protection, education, health, and development unless families, communities, institutions, and government systems work together with a shared understanding and commitment. By fostering open conversations and collective action, SATHI aims to build child-friendly communities where every child is safe, protected, cared for, and empowered to reach their full potential. These dialogues also contribute to stronger child protection systems and create a shared responsibility for safeguarding every child’s right and well-being.

Fundraising Events:  Every contribution helps transform a child’s life. Fundraising enables SATHI to sustain and expand programmes that provide vulnerable children with protection, education, nutrition, healthcare, counselling, rehabilitation, and opportunities to build a brighter future. It also ensures that critical support reaches children in need without interruption, allowing SATHI to respond to emergencies while investing in long-term solutions that strengthen families and communities. By supporting SATHI’s fundraising efforts, individuals and organizations become partners in creating a safer, more caring, and more hopeful future for every child.

Imparting trainings: SATHI organizes trainings to enhance and strengthen the capacities for the civil society, concerned government departments, activists etc. that helps in shaping child protection mechanism, reporting system and on how to engage effectively.
