Nikhil’s Move Towards Stability

Nikhil Nitin Vakte is a 13-year-old boy from Gandhi Nagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra. Before the project’s intervention, he was living in a highly vulnerable situation. Due to an unstable family background and lack of proper care and supervision, Nikhil had dropped out of school after class 7 and spent most of his time on the streets.

Without structure or guidance, he developed substance-use habits and was also involved in stealing. This led to frequent blame and judgement from the local community, leaving him further isolated and disconnected. He lacked a safe environment, regular education, and positive adult support.

Through continuous counselling, follow-up, and case management, the project team worked with Nikhil and coordinated with the Child Welfare Committee for his protection and rehabilitation. He was referred to a child care institution, where he could receive care, supervision, and support in a structured environment.

Although Nikhil was initially resistant, he gradually adjusted with consistent emotional support. He is now attending school regularly, has overcome substance use, and shows visible improvement in his behaviour, discipline, and daily routine. Participation in counselling sessions, hostel routines, and educational activities has helped him rebuild confidence and develop interest in studies.

His family feels relieved that he is in a safer environment, and the community’s perception of him has also begun to change. Nikhil now wants to continue his education, become independent, and build a stable future. His journey shows how timely counselling, safe placement, and sustained support can help a vulnerable child move away from risk and towards dignity, learning, and hope.
